Why oil changes are important?

Oil changes are often overlooked as not important, this couldn’t be further off, however. A vehicle generates its power through an internal engine. This means they are many parts moving at high speeds with tremendous force. With all of this movement being generated, heat and friction are created. The purpose of the oil is to lubricate these parts. Allowing them to create less friction and ensuring that your engine runs smoothly without overheating or wearing down. It also prevents gunk and debris from building up on your engine.

Types of Oils

There are 4 possible types of oil changes that would be needed. If you aren’t sure which oil change service your engine needs no worries, our ASE-certified mechanics will be able to assist you in choosing the correct one.

  1. Conventional oil – This is the overall most common type of motor we see. This oil is best suited for low mileage, light duty, or later model vehicle with a simple engine design.
  2. Synthetic blend- Very similar to conventional oil, except there is a blend that gives drivers some of the benefits of fully synthetic oil, but for much cheaper.
  3. Synthetic- As far as long-term performance goes, synthetic is your safest, but most expensive option. However, with the premium cost of synthetic oil, you could save money down the road by preventing more major engine problems.
  4. High Mileage- This is our most common oil for older vehicles. Containing anti-wear additives along with other ingredients that prolong engine life with engines over 75,000 miles or more.

How often you should get your oil changed

Oil changes are vital to the health of your engine. Automakers usually recommend getting an oil change for every 5,000 to 7,000 miles. However, most vehicle manufacturers recommend getting a quick oil change every 3,000 miles. This is quite a far range of miles. This greatly depends on what oil you decided to go with. Conventional for example we would recommend you get it changed every 3,000 to 5,000. A synthetic should have no problem getting you to that 6,000 to 7,000 though.

The biggest factor in knowing how often to get an oil change service is paying attention to your driving conditions. Being in Colorado, know that a majority of the year would be considered “Server conditions” with the fluctuations in temperature, and altitude. It’s always safer to get your oil checked than to not.

Signs you need an Oil change

There are many telling signs that your vehicle will show if you need an oil change, of course, you can always just bring your car in for professional service. Keep an eye out for any of these following signs as the sooner you catch them the better chance you have of avoiding a more serious and expensive problem later.

  1. If the oil on your dipstick is dirty, dark, or brown. Fresh oil is often light brown or amber.
  2. If your engine is overheating. This happens from a lack of lubrication in your engine, causing it to work harder and generate excessive heat.
  3. If you hear a grinding or tapping noise. If you hear that metal-on-metal sound, this is a huge red flag letting you know that your oil is too low and an oil change is needed ASAP
  4. Lastly, the most obvious is if your dashboard light for oil is illuminated.

Any type of fluid that can be seen leaking from your engine is a major warning that your vehicle needs a quick oil change, or another type of related maintenance is needed.
